asiatic hornets

by Myrtle&Martin » Wed Aug 01, 2012 2:23 pm

A couple of asiatic hornets have been feeding on fallen fruit in our garden. This is the first time we've seen any in our area . We managed to kill them with a spray but It raises concerns about what to do if any more turn up (I know if we spot a nest we should notify the pompiers). There are the usual bottle traps, but don't want to end up catching and killing lots of other 'innocent' insects. Also, there are hardly any honey bees on our lavender bushes this year, though loads of small bumble bees ,and I wonder if that's due to the activities of the asiatic hornets. We're right on the border with the Aude so would be interested to know if people elsewhere in the Ariege have encountered anything similar.
